Health insurance in Georgia

Your health, our purpose · Tu salud, nuestra razón

Madrinas Insurance is a licensed insurance agency serving Georgia families by phone and video, in English and Spanish. We help with marketplace health plans through Georgia Access, Medicare, dental, vision, and life insurance - at no cost to you, because the insurance carriers pay us.

We work with families across metro Atlanta, Gwinnett County, Dalton, and communities statewide. If you’ve found Georgia’s coverage system confusing since it left HealthCare.gov, that confusion is the reason we’re here.

What Madrinas offers in Georgia

Every service below is available to Georgia residents through a licensed bilingual advisor, at no cost to you. Your premium is the same whether you enroll with us or on your own - the difference is that someone walks it with you.

Health insurance

ACA and Obamacare Marketplace

Through Georgia Access. We check your eligibility for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, compare the plans available in your county against your doctors and prescriptions, and complete the application with you - by phone or by video.

Special Enrollment Period Help

Lost a job, moved, married, had a baby, or lost Medicaid? We confirm whether you qualify to enroll outside open enrollment and get it done inside the window.

Individual and Family Plans.

For households that need coverage outside an employer plan, on or off the marketplace.

Private Health Insurance

For the self-employed and anyone who doesn’t qualify for marketplace subsidies or Medicare.

Group Health Insurance

Small-business plans for owners who want to cover their employees without becoming an HR department.

Medicare plans

Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D. We walk new-to-Medicare clients through their first enrollment, review the Annual Notice of Change every fall, and compare plans against your prescriptions and doctors - not just the premium.

Dental, vision, & life

Dental and vision. Standalone or added alongside your health plan. Life insurance, mortgage protection, and final expense. Term, whole life, and burial coverage sized to what your family actually needs - not a formula.

After you enroll

This is the part most agencies skip. We stay reachable for documentation requests, plan changes, renewals, denied claims, and the question in March about something you signed in December.

Why families work with a Madrina

Over 2.5 million families have trusted us since 2013

Georgia’s model was built for agent enrollment.

The state designed its exchange around brokers and direct-enrollment platforms rather than a single government portal. Working with an agent isn’t a workaround here - it’s how Georgia intended the system to function.

It costs you nothing

We’re paid by the insurance carriers. Your premium is identical whether you enroll with us, on HealthCare.gov by yourself, or directly with a carrier.

English or Spanish, always

Not a translated script - advisors who speak the language your family actually uses.

We’re licensed, not a call center

Real credentialed agents who can be held accountable, not a lead-generation form.

How coverage works in Georgia

ACA enrollment

Open enrollment starts

Nov 1

Bilingual support always standing by to find premium tax credits.

Premium tax credits in Georgia are available only through Georgia Access. HealthCare.gov no longer sells plans to Georgia residents. Georgia is also unusual among state-run exchanges in a way that matters practically. The state deliberately built its model around private brokers and direct enrollment rather than funneling everyone through a government portal. You are not required to use the Georgia Access website - a licensed agent can enroll you through an approved direct-enrollment platform instead.

For families who find government websites difficult, or who need the entire conversation in Spanish, that’s a real difference rather than a marketing line. Enrollment timing. Open enrollment for individual and family coverage generally begins November 1 and runs into January, with an earlier December deadline for coverage starting January 1. Georgia sets its own calendar, so check our enrollment deadlines page, call us, or visit GeorgiaAccess.gov for current dates.

Outside open enrollment you need a qualifying life event - losing job-based coverage, marriage, divorce, a new baby, adoption, a permanent move, aging off a parent’s plan. That typically opens a 60-day window.

Medicare in Georgia

Medicare runs on a completely separate calendar from ACA coverage.

Read the Annual Notice of Change your plan mails each fall - costs, formularies, and networks change annually.

Two things worth knowing before you call.

Your Medigap open enrollment window is six months, starts when Part B begins, and doesn’t repeat - outside it, a Supplement can decline you or charge more for your health, so call before you turn 65, not after.

The Annual Notice of Change your plan mails each fall; costs, formularies, and networks change every year. Guaranteed-issue rights and the Medicare Advantage trial right are explained on our Medicare page.

Free, unbiased Medicare counseling is also available in Georgia through GeorgiaCares, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program run by the Georgia Department of Human Services’ Division of Aging Services.

We mention GeorgiaCares because it’s genuinely useful, even though it’s technically competition.

Medicaid in Georgia and
Pathways to Coverage

Georgia has not adopted full ACA Medicaid expansion

Instead it operates a limited waiver program called Pathways to Coverage, and the difference matters.

Pathways covers some adults up to the federal poverty line - not the higher threshold used in expansion states - and requires documented work, schooling, job training, or community service each month. It is narrower than full expansion, and its rules and federal authorization have been revised more than once - confirm current requirements before relying on them.

Traditional Georgia Medicaid covers parents and caretakers only at income well below the federal poverty line. Pregnant women qualify at a substantially higher threshold.

PeachCare for Kids is Georgia’s CHIP program, and it covers children at income levels far higher than most parents assume. If you’ve written off coverage for your children because of your income, that assumption is probably wrong - ask us.

The coverage gap. Because Georgia hasn’t fully expanded Medicaid, a substantial number of Georgians earn too little for marketplace premium tax credits, which begin at the federal poverty line, while not qualifying for Medicaid or Pathways. If that’s you, we’ll tell you plainly and review what genuinely exists. Medicaid, Pathways, and PeachCare accept applications year-round.

Understanding financial help

Premium tax credits lower what you pay monthly, and most Georgia Access enrollees qualify for one. Eligibility and amount depend on income, household size, ages, and county.

Cost-sharing reductions are a separate benefit available on Silver plans for lower-income households. They reduce your deductible and copays rather than your premium and are frequently worth more than the premium savings.

Subsidy rules and income thresholds change from year to year, so we don’t publish estimates here. We calculate your actual numbers with you - in English or Spanish - before you commit to anything.

Georgia has no state-funded premium subsidy program. Your financial help here comes from the federal premium tax credit and cost-sharing reductions.

Serving communities across Georgia

Georgia’s Latino community is concentrated in metro Atlanta - particularly Gwinnett County and Norcross - and in Dalton, where a large share of the population is Hispanic, built up around the carpet industry over decades. Nationally, Hispanic residents go without health coverage at close to three times the rate of white residents.

Got questions? We’ve got you covered

Find answers to common health coverage questions. Clear, straightforward explanations from our expert team.

I used HealthCare.gov before. Why can’t I now?
Georgia now runs its own marketplace, Georgia Access, and HealthCare.gov no longer sells plans to Georgia residents. Premium tax credits in Georgia are available only through Georgia Access - which includes the approved direct-enrollment platforms a licensed agent uses.
Do I have to use the Georgia Access website myself?
No. Georgia built its exchange around brokers and direct-enrollment platforms, so a licensed agent can enroll you through an approved direct-enrollment platform instead - by phone or by video, in English or Spanish.
What is Georgia Pathways to Coverage?
Georgia’s limited Medicaid waiver program. It covers some adults up to the federal poverty line and requires documented work, schooling, job training, or community service each month. Its rules have been revised more than once, so confirm the current requirements with us before relying on them.
Can my children get coverage if we earn too much for Medicaid?
Often, yes. PeachCare for Kids, Georgia’s CHIP program, covers children at income levels far higher than most parents assume, and it accepts applications year-round.
What does it cost to work with Madrinas Insurance?
Nothing. We are paid by the insurance carriers, and your premium is identical whether you enroll with us, through the marketplace yourself, or directly with a carrier.
When can I enroll?
During open enrollment, which generally begins November 1 and runs into January, with an earlier December deadline for coverage starting January 1. Georgia sets its own calendar, so check our enrollment deadlines page or call us for the current dates. Outside it you need a qualifying life event, which typically opens a 60-day window.
