Health insurance in Virginia

Your health, our purpose · Tu salud, nuestra razón

Madrinas Insurance is a licensed insurance agency serving Virginia families by phone and video, in English and Spanish. We help with marketplace health plans through Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace, Medicare, dental, vision, and life insurance - at no cost to you, because the insurance carriers pay us.

We work with families across Northern Virginia, Richmond, Hampton Roads, and the Commonwealth. Virginia layers federal help, state help, and cost-sharing reductions, and most quoting tools only check one. We check all three.

What Madrinas offers in Virginia

Every service below is available to Virginia residents through a licensed bilingual advisor, at no cost to you. Your premium is the same whether you enroll with us or on your own - the difference is that someone walks it with you.

Health insurance

ACA and Obamacare Marketplace

Through Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace. We check your eligibility for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, compare the plans available in your county against your doctors and prescriptions, and complete the application with you - by phone or by video.

Special Enrollment Period Help

Lost a job, moved, married, had a baby, or lost Medicaid? We confirm whether you qualify to enroll outside open enrollment and get it done inside the window.

Individual and Family Plans.

For households that need coverage outside an employer plan, on or off the marketplace.

Private Health Insurance

For the self-employed and anyone who doesn’t qualify for marketplace subsidies or Medicare.

Group Health Insurance

Small-business plans for owners who want to cover their employees without becoming an HR department.

Medicare plans

Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D. We walk new-to-Medicare clients through their first enrollment, review the Annual Notice of Change every fall, and compare plans against your prescriptions and doctors - not just the premium.

Dental, vision, & life

Dental and vision. Standalone or added alongside your health plan. Life insurance, mortgage protection, and final expense. Term, whole life, and burial coverage sized to what your family actually needs - not a formula.

After you enroll

This is the part most agencies skip. We stay reachable for documentation requests, plan changes, renewals, denied claims, and the question in March about something you signed in December.

Why families work with a Madrina

Over 2.5 million families have trusted us since 2013

It costs you nothing

We’re paid by the insurance carriers. Your premium is identical whether you enroll with us, on HealthCare.gov by yourself, or directly with a carrier.

We run all three layers.

Federal credit, cost-sharing reductions, and Virginia’s state savings - most tools stop at the first.

English or Spanish, always

Not a translated script - advisors who speak the language your family actually uses.

We’re licensed, not a call center

Real credentialed agents who can be held accountable, not a lead-generation form.

How coverage works in Virginia

ACA enrollment

Open enrollment starts

Nov 1

Bilingual support always standing by to find premium tax credits.

Virginia uses Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace (marketplace.virginia.gov), the Commonwealth’s fully state-based exchange, operated by the Virginia Health Benefit Exchange within the State Corporation Commission. HealthCare.gov no longer sells plans to Virginia residents.

Enrollment timing. Open enrollment for individual and family coverage generally begins November 1, with an earlier December deadline for coverage starting January 1. Virginia sets its own calendar and has historically closed later than the federal deadline. Exact dates vary by year - confirm current deadlines with us, on our enrollment deadlines page, or on marketplace.virginia.gov rather than assuming.

Outside open enrollment you need a qualifying life event - losing job-based coverage, marriage, divorce, a new baby, adoption, a permanent move, aging off a parent’s plan. That typically opens a 60-day window.

Financial help in Virginia -
three layers, not one

Most quoting tools account for one kind of help. Virginia has three, plus a fourth working in the background.

The federal premium tax credit lowers what you pay monthly, and the large majority of Virginia marketplace enrollees qualify. Eligibility and amount depend on income, household size, ages, and county.

Cost-sharing reductions are a separate benefit on Silver plans for lower-income households, reducing your deductible and copays rather than your premium. They’re frequently worth more than the premium savings.

Virginia’s state premium savings. The Commonwealth funds its own premium assistance for eligible lower- and moderate-income households, administered by the Virginia Health Benefit Exchange and applied automatically at enrollment - there’s no separate application. It stacks on top of the federal credit, which is why a Virginia quote can look materially different from a neighboring state’s for the same household.

The Commonwealth Health Reinsurance Program. It holds Virginia premiums meaningfully lower than they would otherwise be - help you receive without applying for anything.

Income thresholds and funding for the state program are set by the Commonwealth and reviewed annually, so we don’t publish figures here. What we do is run all of it - federal credit, cost-sharing reductions, and state savings - before you commit to anything. If you left coverage because of the price, Virginia is a state where it’s worth looking again.

Medicare in Virginia

Medicare runs on a completely separate calendar from ACA coverage.

Medicare Advantage Open EnrollmentJanuary 1 – March 31Already in an MA plan? One change allowed
Initial Enrollment PeriodThe 7 months around your 65th birthdayYour first Medicare enrollment
General Enrollment PeriodJanuary 1 – March 31If you missed signing up for Part A or B
Medigap open enrollmentThe 6 months starting when your Part B beginsThe only window where a Supplement cannot decline you for health reasons

Read the Annual Notice of Change your plan mails each fall - costs, formularies, and networks change annually.

Two things worth knowing before you call.

Your Medigap open enrollment window is six months, starts when Part B begins, and doesn’t repeat - outside it, a Supplement can decline you or charge more for your health, so call before you turn 65, not after.

The Annual Notice of Change your plan mails each fall; costs, formularies, and networks change every year. Guaranteed-issue rights and the Medicare Advantage trial right are explained on our Medicare page.

Free, unbiased Medicare counseling is also available in Virginia through VICAP (the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program), run by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services.

We mention VICAP because it’s genuinely useful, even though it’s technically competition.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent [number] organizations which offer [number] products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program to get information on all of your options.

Medicaid in Virginia -
Cover Virginia and FAMIS

Virginia has adopted ACA Medicaid expansion, so there is no coverage gap here. Below the Medicaid threshold you qualify for Medicaid; above it you qualify for subsidized marketplace coverage with state savings layered on. Every Virginia resident has a path to coverage.

Cover Virginia covers adults up to the expansion threshold. Applications are accepted year-round.

FAMIS is Virginia’s coverage program for children in families who earn too much for Medicaid. If your income disqualified you, your children may still qualify through FAMIS.

A note on Medicaid paperwork. Federal and state Medicaid documentation and eligibility-verification rules have been changing. Keep your income and contact information current with Cover Virginia, read everything the state sends you, and call us before the deadline on any notice you don’t understand. Most coverage losses come from paperwork problems rather than actual ineligibility.

Serving communities across Virginia

Virginia’s Latino community is concentrated in Northern Virginia - Alexandria, Arlington, Annandale, Woodbridge, Manassas - with one of the largest Central American, particularly Salvadoran, populations in the country. Harrisonburg has a substantial and growing Hispanic community, and Richmond’s has expanded significantly.

Nationally, Hispanic residents go without health coverage at close to three times the rate of white residents. Every Madrina is bilingual, and that’s why.

Got questions? We’ve got you covered

Find answers to common health coverage questions. Clear, straightforward explanations from our expert team.

Does Virginia use HealthCare.gov?
No. HealthCare.gov no longer sells plans to Virginia residents. Virginia uses Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace (marketplace.virginia.gov), operated by the Virginia Health Benefit Exchange within the State Corporation Commission.
Does Virginia have its own subsidy?
Yes. The Commonwealth funds its own premium assistance for eligible lower- and moderate-income households, applied automatically at enrollment with no separate application, and stacked on top of the federal credit. Its income thresholds and funding are reviewed annually, so we check them with you rather than publish them.
I dropped my coverage because it got too expensive. Should I look again?
In Virginia, yes. Federal credits, cost-sharing reductions and the state’s own premium savings stack, and the Commonwealth Health Reinsurance Program holds premiums lower than they would otherwise be. Most quoting tools check only one of those layers; we run all of them before you commit to anything.
When does Virginia’s open enrollment end?
Virginia sets its own calendar and has historically closed later than the federal deadline, but the exact dates vary by year. Open enrollment generally begins November 1, with an earlier December deadline for coverage starting January 1 - confirm the current dates with us or on our enrollment deadlines page.
Did Virginia expand Medicaid?
Yes. Virginia has adopted ACA Medicaid expansion, so there is no coverage gap. Cover Virginia covers adults up to the expansion threshold, and applications are accepted year-round.
What is FAMIS?
Virginia’s coverage program for children in families who earn too much for Medicaid. If your income disqualified you, your children may still qualify through FAMIS.
What does it cost to work with Madrinas Insurance?
Nothing. We are paid by the insurance carriers, and your premium is identical whether you enroll with us, through the marketplace yourself, or directly with a carrier.
