Health insurance in Kentucky

Your health, our purpose · Tu salud, nuestra razón

Madrinas Insurance is a licensed insurance agency serving Kentucky families by phone and video, in English and Spanish. We help with marketplace health plans through kynect, Medicare, dental, vision, and life insurance - at no cost to you, because the insurance carriers pay us.

We work with families in Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Owensboro, and communities across the Commonwealth. Bilingual insurance help is harder to find in Kentucky than in Miami or Newark, which is precisely why we’re licensed here.

What Madrinas offers in Kentucky

Every service below is available to Kentucky residents through a licensed bilingual advisor, at no cost to you. Your premium is the same whether you enroll with us or on your own - the difference is that someone walks it with you.

Health insurance

ACA and Obamacare Marketplace

Through kynect. We check your eligibility for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, compare the plans available in your county against your doctors and prescriptions, and complete the application with you - by phone or by video.

Special Enrollment Period Help

Lost a job, moved, married, had a baby, or lost Medicaid? We confirm whether you qualify to enroll outside open enrollment and get it done inside the window.

Individual and Family Plans.

For households that need coverage outside an employer plan, on or off the marketplace.

Private Health Insurance

For the self-employed and anyone who doesn’t qualify for marketplace subsidies or Medicare.

Group Health Insurance

Small-business plans for owners who want to cover their employees without becoming an HR department.

Medicare plans

Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D. We walk new-to-Medicare clients through their first enrollment, review the Annual Notice of Change every fall, and compare plans against your prescriptions and doctors - not just the premium.

Dental, vision, & life

Dental and vision. Standalone or added alongside your health plan. Life insurance, mortgage protection, and final expense. Term, whole life, and burial coverage sized to what your family actually needs - not a formula.

After you enroll

This is the part most agencies skip. We stay reachable for documentation requests, plan changes, renewals, denied claims, and the question in March about something you signed in December.

We’re licensed, not a call center

How coverage works in Kentucky

ACA enrollment

Open enrollment starts

Nov 1

Bilingual support always standing by to find premium tax credits.

Kentucky uses kynect (kynect.ky.gov), the Commonwealth’s fully state-based marketplace, administered through the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange. HealthCare.gov doesn’t sell plans to Kentucky residents.

One genuine advantage. kynect handles Medicaid, SNAP, and other benefit programs in a single system. If your household needs more than health coverage, that’s one application and one place to update your income rather than three separate agencies. Not many states work that way.

Enrollment timing. Open enrollment for individual and family coverage generally begins November 1. Kentucky sets its own closing date, and it has moved - kynect’s window has at times run into January and at other times closed in December. Don’t rely on last year’s calendar. Check our enrollment deadlines page or call us for the current deadline, and call early in the window rather than late.

Outside open enrollment you need a qualifying life event - losing job-based coverage, marriage, divorce, a new baby, adoption, a permanent move, aging off a parent’s plan. That typically opens a 60-day window.

How Kentucky’s market
is different

Kentucky has fewer carriers offering individual marketplace plans than most states, and their coverage areas don’t overlap evenly. Some carriers serve all 120 counties; others serve a large portion of the state; at least one serves only a small cluster of counties.

The practical result: in a number of rural Kentucky counties, there is a single carrier. If you live in one of those, your decision is about which plan from that carrier - not which company. In Louisville, Lexington, or Northern Kentucky you’ll typically have more to compare.

We check your county first, because it determines what the rest of the conversation looks like.

Medicare in Kentucky

Medicare runs on a completely separate calendar from ACA coverage.

Medicare plans
WindowWhenWhat it’s for
Annual Enrollment PeriodOctober 15 – December 7, every yearChange your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for the following year
Medicare Advantage Open EnrollmentJanuary 1 – March 31Already in an MA plan? One change allowed
Initial Enrollment PeriodThe 7 months around your 65th birthdayYour first Medicare enrollment
General Enrollment PeriodJanuary 1 – March 31If you missed signing up for Part A or B
Medigap open enrollmentThe 6 months starting when your Part B beginsThe only window where a Supplement cannot decline you for health reasons

Read the Annual Notice of Change your plan mails each fall - costs, formularies, and networks change annually.

Two things worth knowing before you call.

Your Medigap open enrollment window is six months, starts when Part B begins, and doesn’t repeat - outside it, a Supplement can decline you or charge more for your health, so call before you turn 65, not after.

The Annual Notice of Change your plan mails each fall; costs, formularies, and networks change every year. Guaranteed-issue rights and the Medicare Advantage trial right are explained on our Medicare page.

Free, unbiased Medicare counseling is also available in Kentucky through Kentucky SHIP (the State Health Insurance Assistance Program), run by the Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living.

We mention Kentucky SHIP because it’s genuinely useful, even though it’s technically competition.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent [number] organizations which offer [number] products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program to get information on all of your options.

Medicaid in Kentucky

Kentucky has adopted ACA Medicaid expansion, and its expansion produced one of the largest coverage gains of any state relative to population. There is no coverage gap in Kentucky.

Kentucky Medicaid covers adults up to the expansion threshold. KCHIP covers children at higher income levels. Apply year-round through kynect - the same system as marketplace coverage.

A note on Medicaid paperwork. Because Kentucky’s expansion population is proportionally large, changes to federal Medicaid rules - including documentation and eligibility-verification requirements - tend to affect more Kentucky households than in most states. Keep your income and contact information current in kynect and treat every kynect notice as time-sensitive. Most coverage losses under requirements like these come from paperwork problems, not from people actually being ineligible. If you receive a notice you don’t understand, call us before the deadline printed on it.

Understanding financial help

Premium tax credits lower what you pay monthly, and most Kentucky enrollees qualify for one. Eligibility and amount depend on income, household size, ages, and county.

Cost-sharing reductions are a separate benefit on Silver plans for lower-income households, reducing your deductible and copays rather than your premium. They’re frequently worth more than the premium savings.

Subsidy rules and income thresholds change from year to year, so we don’t publish estimates here. We calculate your actual numbers with you - in English or Spanish - before you commit.

Kentucky has no state-funded premium subsidy program. Your help here comes from the federal premium tax credit and cost-sharing reductions.

Serving communities across Kentucky

Kentucky’s Hispanic population is smaller than in the other states we serve, but it’s concentrated and growing - Bowling Green, Shelbyville, and the Louisville and Lexington metros in particular.

Smaller doesn’t mean better served. Bilingual insurance help is harder to find in Kentucky than in Miami or Newark, which is precisely why we’re licensed here. Every Madrina is bilingual.

Got questions? We’ve got you covered

Find answers to common health coverage questions. Clear, straightforward explanations from our expert team.

What is kynect?
Kentucky’s fully state-based health insurance marketplace (kynect.ky.gov), administered through the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange. It also handles Medicaid, SNAP, and other benefit programs in a single system, so a household that needs more than health coverage has one application and one place to update its income.
Does Kentucky use HealthCare.gov?
No. HealthCare.gov doesn’t sell plans to Kentucky residents; individual and family coverage is bought through kynect.
When does Kentucky’s open enrollment end?
Kentucky sets its own closing date, and it has moved - kynect’s window has at times run into January and at other times closed in December. Open enrollment generally begins November 1. Check our enrollment deadlines page or call us for the current deadline, and call early in the window rather than late.
How many insurance companies offer plans in Kentucky?
Fewer than in most states, and their coverage areas don’t overlap evenly: some carriers serve all 120 counties, others a large portion of the state, and at least one only a small cluster of counties. In a number of rural counties there is a single carrier, which is why we check your county first.
Did Kentucky expand Medicaid?
Yes. Kentucky has adopted ACA Medicaid expansion, so there is no coverage gap. Kentucky Medicaid covers adults up to the expansion threshold, and KCHIP covers children at higher income levels.
Can I apply for Medicaid and a marketplace plan in the same place?
Yes - kynect handles both. You can apply for Medicaid year-round through the same system as marketplace coverage.
What does it cost to work with Madrinas Insurance?
Nothing. We are paid by the insurance carriers, and your premium is identical whether you enroll with us, through the marketplace yourself, or directly with a carrier.
